Elvarinoq began in 2017 with one holdall and a list of canvas mills. The bag that prompted it had failed at the strap anchor after eleven months, and the maker's answer was that it was out of warranty.
So the range is built around the places bags actually fail: strap anchors, base corners, zip ends, and the seam where a handle meets the body. Those points are bar-tacked, riveted and stitched, which is slower and is the reason a duffel here costs what it does.
We make around 22 pieces at a time and keep making them. There is no wholesale and no outlet channel — everything is sold here, which is what keeps the price and the margin honest.
Vegetable-tanned
Woven at 14 to 18 oz depending on the pattern and finished with a paraffin-free wax. It is water-repellent rather than waterproof: a downpour will eventually get through, and a shower will not. It needs re-waxing about once a year, and we sell the wax at cost.
Tanned with bark rather than chromium, which takes weeks instead of days and is why it darkens instead of cracking. Every hide is different, so two bags in the same colour will not be an exact match — that is the material, not a fault.
Not plated steel. Brass does not rust, and if a fitting shears we can drill it out and replace it without cutting the bag apart.
Bonded or “genuine” leather, PU coatings, plated zinc hardware, or glued-only seams. All four are cheaper and none of them can be repaired.
A duffel is cut, stitched and finished by the same person. It takes about four hours.
Canvas is cut in stacks of six; leather is cut one hide at a time, around the natural marks in it.
Bonded polyester thread at 8 stitches per inch. Stress points are bar-tacked and then riveted.
Edges are burnished and waxed by hand. Brass is set, not glued.
Bags come back to the same workshop. Roughly one in nine ever does.
